The Penny Test: How to Know When You Need New Tires

You do not need special tools to get a rough idea of whether your tires are worn out. You just need a penny and a minute.
How the penny test works
Take a penny and put it into a tire groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If the top of his head is covered by the tread, you still have enough depth. If you can see all of his head, your tread is at or below 2/32 of an inch, and it is time for new tires.
Do not judge by the calendar alone
Tread depth is the safety number that matters most, especially for stopping on wet or snowy roads. But also watch for:
- Cracks or bulges in the sidewall
- Uneven wear (often a sign of alignment or suspension issues)
- Tires more than six years old, even with good tread
If your penny test looks borderline, we are happy to measure it properly and give you an honest read. See our tire and alignment services or stop in.
