What a Serpentine Belt Does, and When to Replace It

The serpentine belt is a single rubber belt that quietly runs some of the most important parts of your engine. Most drivers never think about it until it fails, and by then you are usually stuck.

What it does

That one belt typically drives your alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air conditioning compressor. If it breaks while you are driving, you can lose charging, power steering, and cooling all at once.

When to replace it

Most serpentine belts last around 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but they should be inspected regularly for wear. Watch and listen for:

• A squealing noise, especially on startup or when turning
• Visible cracks, fraying, or glazing on the belt
• Power steering or AC cutting out
