Coolant 101: Why Antifreeze Matters All Year

Coolant, also called antifreeze, does two big jobs: it keeps your engine from overheating in the summer and from freezing in the winter. In Ohio, you need it working on both ends.

Why coolant matters year round

Your engine runs hot, and coolant carries that heat away so nothing warps or seizes. In winter, the same fluid keeps water in the system from freezing and cracking your engine. Old coolant also loses its rust and corrosion protection over time, which can quietly damage your radiator and water pump.

Signs it is time for a coolant service

  • The temperature gauge running hotter than normal
  • Low coolant or a sweet smell
  • Coolant that looks rusty or muddy instead of bright
  • It has simply been a long time since the last flush

A coolant flush is inexpensive insurance against overheating and expensive engine damage. If you are not sure when yours was last done, stop in and we will check it.
